Dr. Simona Ciuta, Ms. Demetra Tsiamis, and Professor Marco Castaldi published a textbook on waste gasification and pyrolysis. This textbook explains the current state of technology development in this area at both the pilot and commercial scale and includes technology case studies and discussion of economic, environmental, and policy related topics.
Demetra Tsiamis returned from her 6 month research collaboration with MatER, the Italian branch of the Global WTERT network directed by Professor Stefano Consonni of Politecnico di Milano. The primary focus of her research was a comparison of waste management and waste statistics methodologies in the US and the EU. Additional research collaborations related to WtE flue gas modeling using BIOMA software and ASPEN modeling of waste gasification technology. Demetra gives many thanks to the MatER team for this fruitful collaboration and looks forward to continued collaboration in 2018.
The US Department of State’s International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) organized a visit of the Chinese Environmental Protection Agency to EEC|CCNY to learn more about WTE in the US and WTE opportunities that could be applied to projects in China. Professor Castaldi and Associate Director Demetra Tsiamis provided a two-hour presentation that was followed by questions and answers. There were nearly 25 representatives from the Chinese delegation that led to some lively discussion related to the benefits of appropriately engineered and sited thermal conversion facilities. It was apparent that the Chinese officials were well informed but still has some dated information regarding WTE performance. Both Castaldi and Tsiamis thought the meeting was productive and well-appreciated by the Chinese Delegation and were honored by their presence. This was the 3rd visit to EEC|CCNY from the IVLP which is the U.S. Department of State’s premier professional exchange program. EEC|CCNY looks forward to the next visit.
EEC|CCNY introduces Professional Seminar and Special Topics in Earth Systems & Environmental Engineering Seminar series in Spring 2018. The course will be taught by a diverse group of waste management experts in academia, industry, and government from around the world. This seminar series will serve as a unifying foundation for the ESE program by offering students a comprehensive and global education on waste sustainability, introducing research opportunities, and providing training in professional and personal skills.

Recently GAIA released another document that includes incorrect information and stresses a policy that is not currently practical. This report is posted here to provide an unbiased set of information regarding sustainable waste management that can be done today. Until we reach a point where our behavior changes toward a more conscientious approach to waste, we need to employ all solutions available to manage our waste in the most environmentally benign way.

2018 WTERT Bi-annual conference to be hosted by the City College of New York.
Dr. Marco Castaldi will discuss the impact of the waste or garbage, estimated at nearly four pounds per person, generated in the U.S. daily.
